It turns out that the captain was looking for the whale skeleton because he is dying of thirst and wants to taste the water of the Dead Sea. However, before he can do this, a vampire squid (thought to be the original spawn of the original vampire Squidward) attacks him, and transforms him into a monster. The captain tries to kill the Squidward, but not before receiving a fatal wound to the stomach. In the end, the captain manages to throw open the trapdoor and find that the mutilated corpse of the whale skeleton has transformed into a giant, muscular, and angry-looking slug.

The book has received widespread critical acclaim, and many of the critics and readers have pointed out that while the plot is poor, the writing itself is great. The author, Lewis Howes, did receive numerous awards for this book, including the Carnegie Prize for his fiction. The Ocean At The End Of The Lane does not deserve the status of a modern classic, but it is still a very entertaining book, that deals with some very interesting issues.
